Five religions and five cultures from around the world.

Religions around the world

Christianity. Followers: Christians. Holy book: the Bible. Main beliefs: Christians believe in one God and follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. They celebrate Christmas, which is Jesus’s birthday, and Easter, which remembers his resurrection. Places of worship: churches.

Islam. Followers: Muslims. Holy book: the Quran. Main beliefs: Muslims believe in one God, called Allah, and follow the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad. They pray five times a day and celebrate Ramadan, a month of fasting. Places of worship: mosques.

Hinduism. Followers: Hindus. Holy books: the Vedas and the Bhagavad Gita. Main beliefs: Hindus believe in many gods and goddesses and believe in reincarnation, the cycle of birth and rebirth. They celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights. Places of worship: temples.

Buddhism. Followers: Buddhists. Main beliefs: Buddhists follow the teachings of Buddha and believe in finding peace and enlightenment. They celebrate Vesak, which honors Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death. Places of worship: temples and monasteries.

Judaism. Followers: Jews. Holy book: the Torah. Main beliefs: Jews believe in one God and follow the teachings of the Torah. They celebrate Hanukkah, which commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Places of worship: synagogues.

Cultures around the world

African culture. Africa is a continent with many different countries, each with its unique languages, traditions and music. Traditional African dances and drumming are a big part of their cultural celebrations.

Chinese culture. Chinese culture is known for its festivals like Chinese New Year, beautiful calligraphy and martial arts like kung fu. The Great Wall is one of its most famous landmarks.

Mexican culture. Mexico is famous for its colorful festivals like the Day of the Dead, tasty food like tacos and burritos, and lively music and dance, including mariachi bands and salsa dancing.

Indian culture. India is known for its diverse languages, colorful festivals like Holi, the festival of colors, and delicious food with spices. Traditional Indian dances and yoga also come from India.

Native American culture. Native American tribes have rich traditions and customs. They are known for their beautiful handicrafts, storytelling and respect for nature. Powwows are gatherings that include singing, dancing and celebrating their heritage.
